Film and stage actress, producer, and singer-songwriter received an award Monday night from The Trevor Project, and organization which operates the only nationwide around-the-clock suicide prevention line for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth.
Each year a person who has shown support of the LGBT community through using their personal and professional influence as well as their volunteerism, is honored with The Trevor Hero Award.
Williams was deeply moved by the honor and said, “I believe strongly in the lifesaving mission of The Trevor Project and I am honored to be recognized by an organization that provides such vital programs for our youth. If any part of my career or the example I’ve set in my life had a positive impact on even one young person struggling to find acceptance and support of their sexual orientation or gender identity, then I am happy to have played even a small part in that.”
The Trevor Project was created after the filmmakers for 1994’s Academy Award winning short film Trevor, a dramady about a gay 13 year old who takes his own life after being rejected by friends due to his sexuality. Ahead of the film being aired for HBO’s audience the filmmakers became aware that there were no national support line and they took it upon themselves to create one.
