Over eight weeks since tennis dynamo and entrepreneur Serena Williams had harsh words for a line referee she felt made a call in error there are reports of what if any her punishment will be.
The Grand Slam Committee met in London over the weekend to discuss the possible ban and fine for Williams. Many sports outlets are stating that a fine is the more plausible than a ban. ITA President Francesco Ricci Bitti stated to the press, “”I don’t think [a ban] would make much sense, because it would penalize the people handing out the punishment. For the Grand Slam committee to exclude her from a Grand Slam doesn’t seem likely.”
It’s expected that the fine from the ITF will be larger than the $10,000 she was fined in September by the ITA. Presumably somewhere over $100,000. This will be significant in the eyes of the general tennis fan but Williams has won over $28.5 million in her professional career, plus countless endorsements so it won’t financially cripple her pockets. We can’t wait to see Serena in the Australian Open.
